Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant was used as a site for filming “Man fitted with a Bionic Eye Implant”
ChTZ-Uraltrac / News / Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant was used as a site for filming “Man fitted with a Bionic Eye Implant”
Grigory Ulyanov, a worker previously employed by Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, is the first person fitted with a bionic eye implant in Russia; this worker visited our plant under the Russia Today's popular science film project "Present Future". This film is about the unique man's fate described in scope of the unprecedented advance in the domestic medicine. The film is intended for informing about all Ulyanov's biography landmarks including those occurred throughout the period when he worked in the plant.
Grigory Ulyanov got a job of a milling machine operator at the fuel equipment manufacturing shop 40 years ago. He suffered a genetic disease - i.e. pigmentary retinopathy - which was detected that period.
"Need to say that I liked machining various parts while working in the perfect and united team. I worked at the plant for six years but thereafter I felt that my sight got worse; so I had to leave for Polikom Training Center where no visual acuity was required. It was hard and very difficult for me to leave the plant", - said Ulyanov. He had to live in the dark environment for rather long years. But later Ulyanov could obtain some information about new vision therapeutic correction technologies from the Deaf-Blind Support Fund "Soyedineniye". At first, he did not ever believe anything. He was examined at the Chelyabinsk clinic and selected as the most suitable one in a thousand of other applicants from the country. And, finally, being successfully operated on June 12, 2017 Grigory could acquire bionic vision. Currently, he is learning to recognize items, to orientate in the street; he has to get accustomed to the new outlined environment. Visiting the shop where Ulyaniv worked for long years ago is an attempt to return the previously familiar and friendly world.
The plant staff gave Grigory Ulyanov a hearty welcome; they showed working places; they wished him well and every success. Kirill Drozhenko, Deputy Head of Assembly and Delivery Shop, demonstrated him an assembly process for making new machines. Grigory Ulyanov tried to carry out some simple milling operations on the machine he had previously operated under the surveillance of Alexander Gurchenkov, a multispindle automatic service technician of Mechanical Shop No. 210. Ulyanov said about is ability to see machine and part outlines and his hands could feel readily for machining. Ulyanov was pleased to see a metal casting process demonstrated in the experimental casting shop.
"I am very glad to visit the plant and to remember all its houses and shops. I feel as if I traveled on the time machine: I could see myself as a young man walking in the shop and operating my machine... I could see new machines, ChTZ workers; I could look after the metal casting process - it was an incredible pleasure! I would like to operate machines but it is a problem since my sight is not good enough yet, though my hands keep everything firmly in my mind", said Grigory Ulyanov.
It is planned that the film about Grigory Ulyanov will finally come out on September under international TV RT.Doc project.
